Water - Israel's Most Valuable and Irreplaceable National Resource

Israel's national survival could be at stake.  A future flash point for Israel is the fact that its water supply is diminishing.  Israel is buying 1.76 billion cubic feet of water from Turkey each year (pumped from Turkey's Manavgat River and brought to Israel on huge tankers) and has signed a contract to continue this for the next twenty years.  Israel's population is increasing and the water supply is shrinking.  In recent years there has been a scarcity of rainfall during the winter months.  This winter rain usually replenishes the fresh water supply in the Sea of Galilee.  But now this fresh water sea is as low as it has ever been in modern times.  IsraelÔø‡s three sources of its National Water System: Lake Kinneret (The Sea of Galilee), the Coastal Aquifer, and the Mountain Aquifer.

In addition to this depletion there are a couple of other major problems that could become international incidents, similar to the one that triggered off the 1967 War.  Syria has a secret pumping station on the Litani River, and Lebanon is siphoning off more fresh water from the Hatzbani River.  These rivers feed into the Jordan River, which empties into the Sea of Galilee.  Israel could easily demolish these pumping stations, but both of the pumps are in Lebanon and Syria.  If Israel blew up either or both of these pumps it could start another major war.

Another factor, but not as major, is the Gaza Aquifer.  Two years after it was turned over to Arafat's Palestinian Authority it was ruined and contaminated beyond repair.  Total control of this Aquifer was under the management of the PA.  The results are horrendous.

At this present time approximately 600-800 million cubic meters of water are flowing into the Sea of Galilee.  But Israel needs 600-700 million cubic meters of water just to provide enough clean H2O for bathing and drinking for six million citizens.  As you know, Israel sits on the edge of a vast desert.  In order for the land to produce the rich harvest of crops, many more million cubic meters of water are needed for irrigation.

How interesting that the Bible predicts that when Jesus returns and lands on the Mount of Olives a very great valley will be formed when the mountain cleaves.  Half of it will remove toward the north, and half of it will move toward the south (Zechariah 14:4 & 8).  Then "living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the Mediterranean Sea, and half of them toward the Dead Sea: in summer and in winter!"  So when Jesus returns to earth Israel's water supply will be solved.  The water shortage problem in Israel is just one more sign of the near return of Jesus Christ.
