SAFE FROM THE "ZERO YEAR" CURSE? by Charles Carrin When I first published this information about fifteen years ago, the article was read at the White House Bible study by the teacher in charge. Whether anyone then—or since—has exorcised the building is unknown tome. A month ago, Charisma Magazine’s On-Line New Service contacted me for additional opinions about the article. They, and others, were concerned for the well-being of President Bush. Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States in 1860, and immediately fell heir to the greatest internal conflict ever to rip the Nation: The Civil War. The President, however, faced other struggles as well: The death of his little son, Willie, a mentally disturbed wife, and a curse initiated against him 20 years earlier in the 1840 election of William Harrison. During Harrison’s military career in which Native Americans were unjustly and violently driven from the lands, the Shawnee "Prophet," Tenskwatawa, in revenge, spoke a curse on the young white man. He predicted that someday Harrison would be elected "Great White Father," but, that he and every other "Father" chosen in the 20th, or "Zero" year, would die in office. Harrison was elected in 1840, caught pneumonia at his inauguration and within a matter of weeks was dead. Twenty years later, in the "Zero" year, 1860, Lincoln was elected. After the death of their son, Mary Lincoln turned to spiritualism in the futile hope of gaining contact with the child. During the War, a wave of occultism swept the Nation as psychics preyed upon grieving families seeking information about their missing soldier-sons. Mary Lincoln was not exempt from that dark influence. Lincoln was not a believer in the occult, but at Mary’s insistence, finally consented for a psychic medium, Mrs. Nettie Colburn Maynard, to hold a sČance in the White House. The event, which achieved nothing for Mary, was held in the Red Room with the President sitting stony-faced and non-participating. This witchcraft rite, called "necromancy" is absolutely forbidden in Scripture, Deuteronomy 18:11. Though a committed Christian in other ways, Lincoln carelessly forgot the Bible warning: "Keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest you become accursed (Joshua 6:18). Whether or not a curse from the sČance or Tenskwatawa came upon the Presidency is open to dispute; but here are facts that conscientious Christians should know: During the War, the Lincoln’s son, Robert, who served in the Army, returned to Washington on the evening of April 14, 1865, seeking his parents. They were at Ford’s Theater and he hurried to join them. As Robert entered the building he was met by a group of men carrying out the body of his dead father. Lincoln had been shot. Sixteen years later, on September 19,1881, Robert Lincoln, who had become the United States Secretary of War, was requested by President James Garfield to accompany him to a college reunion. At the last minute Robert found himself unable to attend and hurried to the Union Railroad Station to inform the President. As he entered the building, he was met by a group of men carrying out the body of the dead President. Like his father, elected in the "Zero" year, President Garfield had been shot. Twenty years later, on September 14, 1901, Robert Lincoln was invited by President James McKinley to be his guest at the Pan American Exposition. In the same pattern as his father, and James Garfield, McKinley had been elected in the "Zero" year. Lincoln accepted and went to the Exposition to join the President. As he entered the main building, he was met by a group of men carrying out the body of the dead President. James McKinley had been shot. With an incredible timing that seemed to mock him and the rest of the Nation, Robert Lincoln entered each of the three Presidential death-scenes at exactly the same haunting moment. More significant than Robert’s experience is this fact: Beginning with Harrison’s death, first to come under Tenskwatawa’s curse, every President elected in the twentieth year died in office until 1980—only one of natural causes. Here are the statistics: 1840: Harrison 1860: Lincoln 1880: Garfield 1900: McKinley 1920: Harding 1940: Roosevelt 1960: Kennedy 1980: Reagan 2000: Bush In 1980, Ronald Reagan was elected President and became next victim-in-line for the curse. Soon after his Inauguration, Derek Prince, former Cambridge University professor, linguist, and internationally known Bible Scholar, spoke in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, about the danger to President Reagan. he called the nation to prayer and spiritual-warfare in his behalf. Brother Prince explained the reality of such curses and that in his opinion, the sČance held by Mrs. Lincoln, fortified the tragedy against her husband and succeeding Presidents. He explained that through the Holy Spirit, Christians have power to break such curses (Mark 16:17,18). Numerous believers around the nation responded to his call. Thirty-five days later, a gunman at close range shot President Reagan. As the gun was fired, Mr. Reagan turned in such a way that the bullet missed his heart. Unlike the six Presidents in the pattern before him, Ronald Reagan lived to complete a very successful, renowned time in office. While informed Christians hope the curse has been broken, we cannot leave George Bush undefended. Continued prayer and spiritual warfare must be maintained in his defense. The Administration preceding him has merely compounded the problem. But, there is more to tell: As of 1986, the White House had not been exorcised and cleansed of its ancient omen. In August, that year, Joan Paulson Gage, writing in the Ladies Home Journal, told of having dinner at the White House and the shocking story President Reagan Shared with his guests. In her words, she was "spellbound by a story he was telling about ghostly manifestations in the Lincoln Bedroom". The Reagans were intelligent, rational people who did not relate such events idly. According to Ms. Gage, the President and Mrs. Reagan fist became aware of something unusual in the Lincoln Bedroom when their dog, Rex, twice became frightened there, began barking frantically, and fearfully backed away. Neither time would the dog go back into the room. Later, when the Reagans were watching television in their room, the dog raised up on it hind-legs, pointed his nose at the ceiling, and went completely around the room in that fashion, barking frantically at something visible only to him. This time the President became concerned that a foreign embassy might be eavesdropping with an electric signal too high-pitched for human ears. The White House staff investigated but found nothing. Only the dog knew what it had seen. When the White House dinner guests responded with frightened interest to the story, President Reagan laughed and said, "I might as well tell you the rest. A member of our family and her husband always stay in the Lincoln Bedroom when they visit the White House. Sometime ago, the husband woke up and saw a transparent figure standing at the bedroom window looking out. Then it turned and disappeared. His wife teased him mercilessly about it for months. Then, when they were here recently, she woke up one morning and saw the same figure standing at the window looking out. She could see the trees right through it. Again, it turned and disappeared." According to Ms. Gage, the Reagan’s dinner guests were wide-eyed as he spoke. Why am I sharing this frightening talk about dead Presidents, the Reagans, and the Bible’s warning curses? The reason is this: Nationally, we are involved in a spiritual struggle to which most of the church has both eyes closed and ears plugged. some absolutely refuse to hear any such Biblical talk. If the reality of curses and demons scares you, I’m sorry—but you need to be scared. Too much is at stake. Another good President can needlessly be destroyed. Former President Clinton and the recent moral crisis in Washington are only new chapters in the devil’s old book. Something has to wake up the church! If the church remains silent, the nation cannot be stirred. We are at war! Battle lines are drawn from the White House to the smallest country congregation. No one is omitted. If we do not pray seriously, fervently, desperately, President Bush can fall victim to the ancient curse. For the sake of God and His Kingdom, we need to get out of our religious stupor and be real! Let’s be Godly men and women, empowered by the Holy Spirit; be like Joshua, rise from defeat, lift our spears a second time toward the city of Ai and see it fall! Instead of merely listening to stories of the White House displaying fallen spirits, we need to leap to our feet in Godly anger and drive these enemies from the land. To do this, we ministers have got to get our heads out of the sand and realize Jesus was serious in everything He taught about unclean spirits. Only then can we truly sing, "Lift high the banners of love, Hallelujah! Sound the trumpets of war. Christ has gotten us the victory, Hallelujah! Jericho must fall!"
